BATH GARDEN

Although a small garden this project gave us the perfect opportunity to explore a ground breaking cement free product called 'Cemfree'. Concrete is a fantastic material which is why it's used the world over and is unlikely to change so we need to figure out how to create materials with the same benefits but without the devastating environmental impact. A small garden with very tight access, cast concrete features were the perfect choice as we could create large cast features in-situ without needing machinery to bring them in. We also used Cemfree for all below ground works.

Simple concrete terraces provide movement through the space, set among wild woodland planting. These lead to an outdoor living space complete with cast concrete coffee table and cooking stand. A low existing retaining wall borders the garden. Traditionally this was an unsightly old block wall but it had a lovely weathered texture and was also holding up the neighbors garden! We decided to embrace this and use it as a backdrop for wilder plantings which work so well with natural tones and give dilapidated features a further sense of place.

The building is made of oak and lined with Siberian larch and a reclaimed barn wood feature wall, all designed to weather to a beautiful silver grey patina.

There was plenty of concrete and brick excavated from the groundwork and where there's waste and a roof there's only one option! We crushed all the site waste to create a growing medium with zero soil. We will seed this to create a fully sustainable bio-diverse roof system. Piles of left over sand are created for bees and logs stacked, creating different habitats for nature to permeate.
